Here we are at the end of another Year and I’m reflecting back on 2010. This past year has been a year of change and personal growth for me. At this time last year I was living in another country and I had just started working on my next project “The Soul Eater”. In the course of this year, I have moved back to the states and reestablished myself back in New York again, the city of my birth, my home and the place that has shaped me musically the most. I have seen my label ManekinekoPro grow and grow, and all the new projects have gotten me to a place of true optimism. I have a ILL Team. The Soul Eater album is culmination I my travels and experiences of the last year, my influences, the music I’ve heard and the people that I have met. I would like to thank all the artist that have contributed to my personal journey and made this possible. I would like to thank all those I have met here and abroad over the past year. This is your album as well. Also, I would like to thank all those that have fronted, because you have played your part. Lastly, for all of those that have donated to help bring my next project to another level you are the reason I make music.

The Souls Eater Premise: The central figure, John Smith leads a very boring life, works an office job, & finds that his only escape is when he develops an ability to creep into the dreams of others and to live their lives to the vicariously by dreaming the adventures that escape him in his bleak waking days. John re-imagines their life in a way that entertains him, but finds out that in order for him to do so, the dreamer can no longer exist. All of the fears, loves and losses that the person he dreams of have experienced in their lifetime become a part of John’s memory which eventually pushes him to insanity. Each song is another life he has stolen and creates a portrait of a darker side of his own.

Rap4Fame will be putting out the third part of its compilation-series this December!

While hardly no one will have heard of the German website Rap4Fame thus far and even less of you will be familiar with the first two installments mostly containing tracks by German artists, this third part might be interesting for you. Especially because we had almost exclusively German acts on our first parts, we got at some of America’s finest artists to contribute for the next round. Since we didn’t just want to shoot for a collection of tracks thrown but not fitting together, all the artists involved, lots of them ranging from Eastcoast or Midwest, show a mental kinship regarding the music they make. So those of you who step into the underground scene from time to time, where the legacy of BoomBap music is progressively being carried on, might be familiar with some of the names. Producer Black Panther is at it again! My latest album is sure to impress and get stuck in your head… for all the right reasons! Each of my albums is centralized around a unique and creative concept. As a producer, I bring together a variety of styles and sounds in a carefully constructed way. My newest album “The Soul Eater” reaches across many genres, and brings something for everyone. You can help me deliver my next project, which is on the verge of completion. All of the songs have been produced, written and recorded, and now is some of the priciest parts of delivering it to everyone’s ears!

Shaz ILLYork
Born Robert Rodriguez on January 13, 1983, and raised in Astoria, Queens, New York City, Shaz grew up in a broken home. He started life on the streets from an early age. His family moved around all corners of Queens; Astoria, Woodhaven, Howard Beach, and Jamaica giving young Shaz a sample of the multiple cultures that dwell in New York City. He was only eleven when he realized his passion for lyrics and rhyme with the help of two radios. Money was scarce and it wasn’t long until he dove deeper into the hip hop world through a life of graffiti, hustling, and racking.

In October 2004, Shaz’s years of delinquent behavior got himself arrested and put away for 5 years. It was during his prison stint that he found music and writing again. Shortly after his release in ‘09, Shaz began performing at open mics, most notably Manhattan’s revered “End of the Weak”, the longest running open mic series at Club Pyramid. These cultivated performances gave this artist on the rise much recognition and acclaim. His escalating following led him to release the single Pain Killers in July 2010 and received over 10,000 views on youtube.com.
Shaz, now 27, knows no bounds in getting his music across to mainstream ears. His debut EP, High, Fly & Broke (October 2010), is homage to where he has been, where he is now, and where he is going.

This is OKTOBER ZERO.
Hailing from The Bronx, the NY-Rican born Oktober has seen, heard, and lived Hip Hop in its purest form. Using this knowledge of Hip Hop music and culture, Oktober paints vivid pictures through lyrics about himself and his environment, money, his peoples struggle, poverty, raw experience on the streets, graffiti art, run-ins with the law, issues in the home, political conspiracy, religion, drugs, and having sex with random women. With saying his share about society's ills, Oktober's solution is simple: be the Hip Hop Vigilante, who knows no rules, laws, government, or boundaries, and aims to obtain fortune and prosperity at the end of his mission.
Though "zero" is the beginning of everything, Oktober the artist is no beginner. Oktober began showcasing at open mics across NYC in the late 90's and met the legendary DJ/urban tastemaker Bobbito Garcia. Truth Universal has been a fixture in the New Orleans underground scene. Inspired by the golden age emcees, the New Orleans based emcee has been following in their footsteps with each of his releases. With his latest project the Guerrilla Business EP set to drop next week, I got the chance to speak with TU on a variety a topics such as his upcoming EP, the Saints winning the Super Bowl and his rocky label situation with Paris’ Guerrilla Funk Records. Why the name Truth Universal?

Truth Universal is my Divine attribute. It speaks me seeking, and striving to speak and live Universal Truth.

Who are some of your musical inspirations?

Poor Righteous Teachers, Andre Tanker, Brother Resistance (Network Riddum Band), Mantronix, Just-Ice, DMX, Dana Dane, Clark Kent, Slick Rick, Vance Wright, Doug Fresh, KRS One, Public Enemy, Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince, Peter Tosh, Bob Marley and Run DMC.

Who is involved in the Guerrilla Business EP?

Guests on this project are pretty much fam that are close by: Evelyn Champagne, Skipp Coon and Lyrikill. DJs include DJ Chief One, DJ Maxmillion, and DJ Himuki. On production we have Dan Freeman, N.O. Bricks, Prospek, DJ Himuki, DJ Maxmillion, Mr. Nick, Gensu Dean, and Snuff Sugar.

Sounds like a good lineup. How long is the EP? Is this self released or through a label?

Word, those are some VERY talented folks. It’s short…10 track IDs…8 original tracks, 1 remix, 1 interlude. It’s a self release; most of my work is. “Self-Determination” was a partnership between Truth Universal Music & Dragon’s Breath Records. The worldwide digital release will be handled by http://root70lounge.com .

What’s up with the Guerilla Funk label?

Signed there since 2006, and basically is STILL bullshitting with my album, Decolonization.

Are you trying to get out of the contract?

Yeah…I have no desire to release anything there, I see no point in that. Dude talks this great game, but ends up wasting most of the cats’ time.

Are they sort of holding you hostage though? Do you have the rights to the album to release it somewhere else or on your own?

There is no “they,” it’s only Paris. While I am grateful for the exposure on the Hard Truth Soldiers compilations, I don’t have time waste waiting around for who knows what.

For anybody familiar w/ Self Determination, they know you worked w/ legends like Wise Intelligent (Poor Righteous Teachers) & Cee Know the Doodlebug (Digable Planets). What was that working with them? How did you link up with them?

It was an honor. I met Doodlebug at a Digable Planets reunion tour show in N.O. I gave him that “Decolonization Mixtape” to check out. We built over the phone about working on something. We solidified things when I opened for them in Austin some months later.

The song was actually inspired by writings by Wise Intelligent and Bakari Kitwana. I started building with Wise’s manager (Born Free) the same time the song was in production. It was on something totally different, but I let him hear the joint, he got it to Wise, and we went from there.

Now you’re one of the most prominent artists in the New Orleans underground scene. What are your thoughts on the scene right now?

It’s wonderful at this point in time. There’s a renaissance of sorts happening. There’s a good deal of positive creative energy, initiative and determination. The artists are no longer waiting on the local industry only to provide performance opportunities. We do our own events: “GRASSROOTS!” Soundclash, Uniquity, New Orleans Hip Hop, Streetwear joints, and more.

As I’ve made sure our readers know, the Saints recently won the Super Bowl lol. But the effects on the city, state & community have been huge. The hip hop scene is no different. What’s it been like seeing guys like K Gates & Dee-1 get exposure nationwide because of their Saints anthems?

Those brothers are exceptional talents, but yeah the anthem content was in line with the hype and journey. I hope going forward some of the light stays shining on the city. It’s still, and always will be, a bittersweet event/time for me. It seems that folks have forgotten about the millions put into Superdome repair while a large number Katrina affected folks were still displaced and/or practically homeless. I know of folks who still can’t afford to come home. Of course I went to Saints games growing up, etc., so there is a “Wow!” factor involved. However, it’s temporary distraction from the incessant violence, homelessness and messed up public school system though.

If you had to pick one song that defines your career up to this point, what would it be?

“The Grassroots Campaign” produced by N.O. Bricks. It’s just speaking on the underground MC struggle. “Eloquent as, Gibran’s pen when the mic get blessed/ Seventeen year overnight success!” I list influences in terms of upbringing, emcees, and study. I have to say that one. It’s a classic crowd rocker, call and response track.

If you were stranded on a desert island and could only have one album to listen to, what would it be?

Damn. Right now I’ll say Digable Planets’ Blowout Comb. That’ll stay in my top 5 forever! The Hip Hop aesthetics it embodies, the progressive content…It’s very near perfect to me and I I never tire of listening to it.

I would love to thank everybody that came out last night to The show last night "Somebody Is Gonna Get Pregnant " And for all those who couldn't make it you missed a very memorable show. Hip Hop can't be stopped and like any great artist White Fang and His Crew Push through there set Winner Over the Crowds Support. GRLFRNZ Bust on to the scene with a Show stopping Set and also debut a new song for the masses and with a drunk Topless Flash it was over. La Comby Perfecta & Chuggo as always ended off a good night with a solid performance that couldn't be denied. Next Time Don't Get Lefted behind and COME!!

I Think I was Sleeping

I have to say I was not anticipating the new Kanye Record That much and I was'nt really blown away by the last one.... Don't get me wrong the singles were hot but I felt over all a little bored with it. To me it was'nt his best work. But it was a hell of a lot better than 95 percent of the bullshit that was out at the time. And as always his video are the shit!!! When Iheard he wasn't rapping on the New record I thought he really lost his mind and was about to be on the verge of losing his strangle hold on the music industry. I like The Love Lock Down at first but it was nothing major, But I'm really feeling The "Robo Cop" Joint a lot. The concept is dope and the" Coldest Winter " might be one of his most personal joints. I'm even getting passed the Auto Tune Thing That soooooo Over used right not it's crazy. BUt I have to say out of all The Joint I'm really fucking feeling the "Heratless " Record Man it's a monster in the making, very melodic and addictive and the Video is fucking dope !!! This is what hip hop needs visaually to be pushing boundraies Instead of the Club scence naked girl shit....Oh I love to to see half naked woman but let's come up with new Ideas to represent our music. T.I.'s " Paper Trial " My thoughts

T. I is one of my favorite hip hop artist at this point and now with his pending legal problems I think it will be his best album yet. Not because it makes him more real so to speak but T.I. is showing a lot of Black men in a public forum responsibility. I loved the king album but I think as a responsible artist we need to stop making too much ultra violent music and corrupting the minds of our youth. They look at these songs as real life and the way they should lead there lives but I'm not for censorship and I love a good shoot em up movie book, as well as song. But I think we need to give them options to. And I think The T. I. "No Matter What" is a great example of that. So keep playing 50 cent and Uncle Murder cause I do too,but pop in Lupe or Common for balance. I look forward to T.I. most introspective and personal album yet.
